Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is a challenging path for those undertaking Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing. Known for its steep incline and rapid pace, this route is demanding and thrilling.

The Umbwe Route is known as the shortest, steepest, and most challenging path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spanning approximately 53 kilometres, this route typically takes 5-7 days. It starts from the southern side of the mountain at the Umbwe Gate. The initial days involve steep and direct ascents through dense rainforests, offering little time for gradual acclimatization.

Due to its rapid elevation gain, the Umbwe Route is recommended for experienced climbers who are well-acclimated and physically fit. The trail eventually merges with the Machame Route near the Barranco Camp, allowing climbers to enjoy the scenic highlights such as the Lava Tower and Barranco Wall.

The route is offered at a minimum of six days, though seven days is recommended when attempting this route. The Umbwe route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize.
